World Book Day: Chinese Character Seal Carving Workshop

To celebrate World Book Day, the library led students to explore the origin of books—words. We collaborated with the Chinese Society club to host a “Chinese Character Seal Carving Workshop” on April 24, 2024, and invited Mr. Kong Hoi Kan, a Bachelor of Visual Arts graduate from Hong Kong Baptist University, to teach students the art of seal carving.
Mr. Kong has long been dedicated to studying and promoting seal culture and possesses rich experience and skills in seal carving.
Before the workshop began, the librarians introduced books related to words to arouse students’ interest. Then, Mr. Kong presented the history and cultural development of seals, using examples of seals and carvings commonly seen in our lives to enhance students’ understanding. Following this introduction, he began teaching the students how to carve seals.
Each student chose a character and was able to create a unique seal in a short period of time by applying the carving techniques they had learned. This activity gave them a sense of accomplishment and increased their interest in words and reading.
